Painters practice the art of painting.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface, or support base. It’s the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language. The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is commonly referred to as a painting. The term painting describes both the act and the result of the action.

Surfaces include walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and painters may incorporate multiple other materials including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and objects.

Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing in elements such as drawing, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction. Painters combine these elements into expressive patterns to represent real or supernatural phenomena, to interpret a narrative theme, or to create wholly abstract visual relationships.
